(KMOV.com) -- The state of Illinois is trying to return nearly $2 billion of unclaimed property to the rightful owners.

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is trying to get the word out so residents will come forward to claim their belongings.

Last year, Illinois returned $129 million and is on track to return more money this year and Rutherford said that’s good for the Illinois economy.

“You think about it. You take $129 million and put it back in the economy,” said Rutherford, “It’s not from some grants from government or a loan or evil things out there. This is really your money.”
