Menard, Ill. (KMOV) – Menard Correctional Center is on lockdown while the Illinois Department of Corrections investigates an alleged assault on five prison employees.

Three prisoners are believed to be involved in the Thursday afternoon incident, according to IDOC spokeswoman Stacey Solano.  Menard prison houses 3200 inmates and is a maximum security facility in Chester, Illinois.

“Thanks to the rapid and professional response of our Menard staff, the situation was quickly and effectively secured and brought under control,” said Solano.

Injured employees were treated at a nearby hospital Thursday and released the same day, said Solano, who couldn’t comment on the specifics of their injuries.  Solano also wouldn’t comment on the circumstances of the alleged assault.

IDOC said the individuals involved will be “appropriately disciplined” and that the department will be working with the local state's attorney to bring formal charges against the inmates involved.
