(KMOV.com) -Tax Preparers with the Metro St. Louis Tax Coalition said they have seen an increase of people desperate for help.
The organization said clients went to the wrong tax preparer who promised big returns.
“We’ve had returns prepared at check cashing exchanges or set up at gas stations with a card tables preparing returns. These are bogus, said Desmond Leong, the director of the Metro St. Louis Community Tax Coalition.
Several clients are now forced to give back thousands of dollars back to the IRS, in most cases the money is already gone. Leong said some of his clients had their taxes done at a business at the intersection of Kingshighway and Page in north St. Louis.
Workers there would only confirm the tax preparer is only there from January to April. They would not tell News 4 any names or contact information.
Leong also said this is not the only bad tax business, but said there are others on both sides of the river.
