ST. LOUIS (KMOV — A construction issue on the Chain of Rocks Bridge caused a major traffic backup for commuters Thursday morning.
Cars were forced to slowly filter across the bridge, as only one lane in each direction was open. At one point, traffic was backed up to Illinois Route 3.
I-DOT officials apologized for the delays, as construction was supposed to be finished by 5 a.m.
Instead, those lanes stayed closed until about 1 p.m., when construction was complete.
I-DOT officials said the contruction company hired to do the work was to be blamed for the delays.
The contractor faced $1,500 in fines for every 15 minutes the lanes stayed closed past 5 a.m. That means the company will be fined a total of $48,000.
