(KMOV) – Police said a man and his teenage son who went missing near the Meramec River earlier this month have been found safe.

Authorities said someone called deputies Thursday afternoon after spotting 36-year-old Michael Hill and 16-year-old David Hill on Mill Spring Rd. near some railroad tracks just east of St. Clair.

Franklin County deputies said officers responded to the scene and noticed foot tracks in the mud. Deputies said they followed the tracks and heard people talking. That’s when they found the boy and his father camping in a tent in the woods. Deputies said both were covered in mosquito and chigger bites.

Deputies said the two told officers they had walked from the Pacific Palisades area to Franklin County and were on their way to Branson. Michael Hill said he decided to leave his wife because of family issues.

Both people were taken in for questioning by St. Louis County police. No charges have been filed.

A woman called St. Louis County Police on July 2 after she lost sight of Michael and David Hill near Lost Hill Lane and Franklin Road.

The woman told police her family was in the area visiting when the father and son went looking to fish in the Pacific Palisades Conservation area.  When they found a spot, the woman and her young grandson came to meet them, but they never met up.

Authorities searched the area for several hours, but never found the two.

Investigators say the woman had recently returned home from a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy.
