ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV) – Hundreds of people came out to watch construction crews blast a section of the Blanchette Bridge on Sunday morning.

The hillside at the Heart of St. Charles banquet center was filled with spectators as one section of the bridge's steel truss was demolished, dropping 1.5 million pounds of steel into the Missouri River. MoDOT officials said the contractor has 48 hours to extract all of the dumped steel from the river.

Some spectators told News 4 they had watched the bridge being built, more than 50 years ago.

The blasting closed the bridge for traffic from 10 to 11 a.m. The second (and final) blast will take down the rest of the bridge.

News 4 will continue to check on the reconstruction process as the Missouri Department of Transportation releases information.
