Snow blankets the southern part of the News 4 viewing area

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -- Residents in the south and eastern part of Missouri and Illinois woke up to several inches of snow Wednesday morning.

Snow quickly moved east and out of the News 4 viewing area Wednesday morning, leaving just a small amount of snow in the St. Louis metro area.

4Warn Meteorologist Kent Ehrhardt says residents in area such as Mount Vernon, Ste. Genevieve, Desoto, Salem, and Farmington have up to 2 inches of snow on the ground. Parts of  Iron County received over 3 inches Wednesday morning. 

Temperatures will reach the upper 20's for the morning drive.

The rest of the day calls for a cloudy forecast with wind chills in the low teens. Blowing and drifting snow in portions of the the viewing area may decrease visibility for travelers

Travel in the most-impacted areas should be postponed or limited until conditions improve.

There is a new blizzard warning for Clay County, Illinois in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
