(KMOV) --- Residents in Hanley Hills say Missouri American Water refused to fix dozens of deep trenches they dug to make repairs in the city.

Many of the locals say their main concern about the six feet deep trenches is the possibility of children falling inside them, and despite the numerous complaints from residents, Missouri American Water has done nothing.

“I don’t want to see them fall down and not be able to get out,” said local resident Gerald Hudson. “Some of them are six feet deep.”

The only source of security for the trenches is covering them with plywood, which is easily movable.

Missouri American Water says they are replacing 1000 feet of water main which was installed in 1948. Representatives of the company say they failed to notify customers in advance and say plywood is not a safe cover, but are working with their contractor to make sure the trenches are better covered.

M.A.W also says they are planning to have a face to face meeting with the residents to explain the entire project.
