(KMOV.com) – Monday, construction began on new phase of housing project in East St. Louis.
Crews broke ground on the Mount Sinai project in the Winstanley neighborhood. The project is part of a promise by a local church to bring affordable housing to East St. Louis. The project is slated to cost $9.5 million, 30 homes will be built. Developers received tax credits to give it a boost.
Mayor Alvin Parks told News 4 the homes are planned for low income families. He said the developer will be offering potential residents a long term lease and an option to buy.
"It will spawn other development we're talking with other developers that are looking to do things near the Mt Sinai development.," Parks said.
Leaders told News 4 the development should be complete by spring, 2015.
