FARMINGTON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Governor Jay Nixon met with members of his emergency management team and surveyed the fire burning in Iron County by helicopter Saturday morning.

Governor Nixon met with members of the press at Farmington Regional Airport at 11:15 a.m. to discuss the wildfires.

On Friday, Governor Nixon activated the State Emergency Operations Center due to the fires, record heat, and lack of rain across the state. The Missouri National Guard has been directed to prepare supplies and personnel in case they are needed to support firefighting operations.

Missouri Director of Public Safety Jerry Lee, Major General Stephen Danner, the adjunct General of the Missouri National Guard, and State Fire Marshal Randy Cole joined the Governor in accessing the damage.

The fire has burned about 600 acres in Iron County, but firefighters say they have made progress in keeping the blaze contained.

Crews plan to spend the rest of the weekend working around the fire's perimeter.
