(KMOV) – Pike County Fire District says the fire started around 6:18p.m. at Pike-Lincoln Tech School, in Eolia, Missouri. No one was inside the building at the time.

St. Charles County sent a tanker strike team, a contingent of four fire districts, to help the local fire crews as they fought the blaze at the school late Friday night.

The building has suffered extensive damage. Firefighters say they have remained in a defensive stance for hours to help stop the fire.

They did attempt to fight the blaze from inside the building, but officials say it was too hazardous to continue using that method.

Over 30 fire trucks and 125 firefighters from neighboring towns were called in to aid local crews. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Residents say the fire is devastating for the community because of the loss of welding and body shop classrooms, which taught thousands of students unique skills which helped the surrounding communities.
