(KMOV) – Officials say a St. Louis Public Schools student brought a gun onto an elementary school campus on Wednesday.
According to officials, the 13-year-old student was spotted with a pistol at Jefferson Elementary School, located in the 1300 block of Hogan in north St. Louis.
District officials said the weapon was confiscated and the district was handling the situation with state authorities.
According to officials, the student has been taken into the custody of the family court. It is unclear if charges will be filed against the parents.
A source said the student will never return to the campus at Jefferson Elementary School.
The district said the student committed a type one infraction and will likely be referred to an alternative school that will provide more structure.
The district also released a statement about the current security measures in place. Jefferson Elementary School has only one point of entry and visitors must be buzzed into the school.
“Please be assured that the District will continue to review its safety policies and procedures to ensure that we are maintaining a safe and secure learning environment,” Principal Nathalie Means said in a statement sent home to parents.
It was not immediately known how the gun was discovered or when he was detained.
But a parent of another child at the school said the juvenile had also brought the gun to campus on two other occasions.
The parent said the child had warned other students not to tell anyone about the gun or he would shoot them.
