ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The St. Louis area has seen a rash of violent robberies with a common theme. Cell phones have been the target in a growing number of robberies.
What the thieves don’t realize, once those cell phones are stolen, they become virtually useless.
Just last month cell phone providers began a database of stolen cell phones. When the robber reactivates a stolen phone, it will register as stolen, catching the thief red handed.
The initiative was brought to the cell phone carriers by the Major Cities Police Chiefs Association in an effort to deter crime.
If you have your cell phone stolen, make sure you call your provider right away.
They can not only deactivate your phone remotely, they can also make sure your phone is put in the database.
