(KMOV) – The government shutdown is not only impacting people’s day-to-day life but it could mean life or death for some cancer patients.
When standard medicine fails, many cancer patients turn to the National Institute of Health for clinical trials but while federal workers are furloughed, that avenue is closed.
This left hundreds of cancer patients waiting for their applications for clinical trials sit without review.
"I find it difficult that they're not looking at the lives that are at stake and they're looking at this as whose winning or not,” said Michelle Langbehn. “It’s not about winning, it’s about surviving.”
More than 13,000 people who work with the National Institute of Health have been furloughed because of the shutdown.
