Firefighters initially made entry to the building, getting up to the third floor before backing out once fire busted through the roof.

“It’s just sad. It’s your school, your old school,” said Janil Davis, a witness and former student at Hempstead Elementary. “It’s just sad.”

Part of the building did collapse from the 4-alarm blaze and officials say they believe the preliminary cause of the fire to be lightning.

The elementary school is one of many Northside schools that closed in 2003.

No firefighters were injured.
