(KMOV.com) – Nearly half the residents in Glen Carbon are under a boil water order until further notice after public works officials say a water main broke during Tuesday night's storms.

Officials say they have not been able to locate the break and residents could experience low water pressure or discolored water.

According to officials, 50 percent of the town now has access to water, though the boil water order remains in place until further notice.

Under the ‘boil water’ notice, all affected customers are advised that the water may be unsafe for human consumption, and water used for drinking or food preparation must be boiled for five minutes prior to use. Ice cubes made after the incident occurred should be discarded during the boil order period.

In the meantime, the city is offering residents a chance to pick up drinking water.

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., residents will be able to pick up water behind Village Hall. Officials said photo identifications and utility bills are required and only one case of drinking water will be given per household.

For more information, please contact the Village at 618-288-1200.
