BELLEVILLE, Illinois—A southwestern Illinois man who admitted to beating his then-girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter was sentenced to 11 years in prison Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty-six-year-old Kraig Monroe Jr. of Belleville pleaded guilty Monday in St. Clair County to a felony count of aggravated battery.

The victim, Amanda Runyon, was beaten so severely that doctors at one point worried she would need a feeding tube the rest of her life.

Authorities say Monroe was babysitting Runyon in February 2010 in his Belleville-area trailer home when he repeatedly punched her in the stomach to stop her from crying.

The girl sustained tears to her liver, and surgeons later had to remove a quarter of the child’s intestines.

Following the sentencing, the families of Monroe and the victim squared off in the parking garage. Police rushed in to break up dispute, which reportedly was only a shouting match.

Monroe's sentence will start immediately.
