(KMOV.com) — The City of Belleville plans to move its police department to an existing building rather than a new one, in order to save taxpayer dollars.
The city council has given the green light to buy the Bank of Belleville building on West Main Street for $3.1 million.
City leaders say an overall project to move the police department and renovate city hall is projected to cost more than $15 million dollars.
Alderman Joe Hayden told News 4 us it’s a better deal for the taxpayers.
“I believe so because the cost to build new would be almost double,” he said. “Plus the fact we don’t have the funding source for that in the immediate instance.”
The Belleville City Council still needs to approve funding for building renovations.
