ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An armed robber is in custody after police say he barricaded himself inside a safe at a north St. Louis store.

According to reports, as a manager and employee were leaving the Family Dollar store in the 4300 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive just after midnight, they were approached by a man with a handgun. Police said the manager and employee had stayed late to stock shelves.

The employee fled from the scene on foot while the manager was forced back inside the store to open the safe. After opening the safe, the manager was able to run from the store without being injured. When the manager fled, the suspect stayed in the store.

Officers arrived on the scene and found the man in the store’s safe. They said he refused to come out, but later decided to surrender about an hour later.

Authorities said the suspect is a 19-year-old male, but did not release his name since he has not yet been charged.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
