ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A proposed sales tax increase has received overwhelming support from the St. Louis Board of Alderman Arch Tax Ordinance committe.
30 percent of the 3/16 cent increase would go toward the extensive plan to overhaul the Arch Grounds, and passed seven to one. The total cost of the project for the Missouri side is an estimated $380 million.
The tax increase is designed to generate $760 million over its 20-year span, with $100 million designated for Arch Grounds renovation.
In order for the tax measure to make April’s ballot, the St. Louis County Council must approve the measure as well.
“We have a plan in place for $62 million dollars without a tax increase,” said 17 th Ward Alderman Joseph Roddy. This money, coupled with $33 million secured in private funding and the proposed tax revenue makes up the nearly $380 million project.
