(KMOV) – Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) crews discovered a failed manhole structure near Resurrection Cemetery during a routine maintenance inspection Tuesday.

An undetermined amount of sewage has flown into MacKenzie Creek. Crews are working to pump around the manhole and stop sewage flow into the creek.

There is no immediate threat to public safety, but MSD asks the public avoid contact with MacKenzie Creek for the next 48-72 hours. If anybody comes into contact with the creek, they are advised to wash the area with soap and water.

It may take several days to clean up the seven thousand foot area affected.

The cause of the failure is undetermined at this time.
