A 3-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after falling out a third-story window on Saturday.

Seattle Police said the boy fell out of the window in the 5000 block of 30th Ave. NE.

The child was taken to the hospital; his condition was not immediately known.

UW Medicine says every year, 30 to 50 children are treated at Harborview Medical Center for injuries caused by falls from windows.

They say window screens do not keep children from falling. They are designed to pop out for fire safety and can be pushed out by the weight of a toddler.

Seattle Children's Hospital offers the following tips:

  • Move furniture away from windows.
  • Install window guards or stops on windows. Kids can fall from windows open as little as five inches.
  • Don’t rely on window screens – screens keep bugs out, but they don’t keep kids in.
  • If you don’t have window guards or stops, keep windows latched.
  • Watch young children closely.
