(KMOV) – Enforcement on more than a dozen double-fine zones in Wentzville will begin Thursday.

The city’s board of aldermen recently unanimously passed an ordinance calling for what are known as “increased safety areas.”

Starting Thursday, the fine goes from $5 per mile over the speed limit to $10 per mile in certain areas.

The issue first came to the forefront in July after residents kept complaining drivers were going too fast through neighborhood streets.

Neighborhood associations had to collect signatures from residents to have their streets included in the program. The city has already put up the signs telling drivers they’re in a double fine zone, and residents hope it increases observance the 25 mile per hour limit.

The city says the double-fine zones are part of a one-year pilot program.

Wentzville Mayor Nick Guccione last fall told News 4 they looked into other options like speed bumps, but the fine zones made the most sense.
