ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A wrong-way driver is dead after crashing head-on with an 18-wheeler early Saturday morning in Illinois.

Police say an SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 at milemarker 16 around 1:30 a.m.

An 18-wheeler had changed lanes to pass another tractor trailer. The driver of the SUV tried to avoid hitting the tractor trailer and swerved, but the vehicles hit head on, causing both to catch fire.

The driver and co-driver of the 18-wheeler escaped without serious injury. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of that driver has not yet been released.

Both westbound lanes of I-64 were shut down while officials investigated the crash. The interstate opened about three hours later.
