WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- A 52-year-old woman has died of malnutrition after staging a hunger strike at the Lake County Jail.

Authorities are trying to locate any family or friends of Lyvita Gomes. They believe she was originally from India and had been living at a hotel in Vernon Hills.

Gomes was arrested Dec. 14 after missing a court date for a resisting arrest charge.

Sheriff's officials say she announced the hunger strike soon afterward.

Commander Wayne Hunter, chief of administration for the sheriff's office, says the reason for the strike was unclear.

She was transferred from the jail's hospital to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where she died Tuesday.

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey says an autopsy shows she died of dehydration and malnourishment. She had no signs of trauma or disease.
