(KMOV) – An Alton woman faces charges after she allegedly stole liquor from a Godfrey Walmart on four separate occasions starting in late October.
Barbara Gates, 30, was charged Friday with retail theft under $300. Her bond was set at $40,000.
According to police, Gates on Thursday took four bottles of liquor from the Walmart in the 6000 block of Godfrey and left without paying.
An officer on duty confronted Gates and she jumped in a Chevrolet SUV and fled the scene.
She was later spotted driving near 4th St. and Alton St. and taken into custody.
Police investigated and learned she had stolen liquor from the same Walmart on three other occasions starting on Oct. 30.
Authorities say she had stolen about $740 worth of liquor total.
Her charges were upgraded to felony due to a 2012 conviction of theft in Madison County.
Gates qualified for the enhanced felony offense due to a prior 2012 conviction in Madison County for retail theft.
