ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A former bookkeeper is accused of embezzling $160,000 while she worked at a shelter aimed at helping women who just got out of prison.
Jean Kilroy-Bensinger, 49, admitted to stealing the money from the Center for Women in Transition, where she herself stayed after getting out of prison for a previous embezzlement conviction.
Bensinger said she stole the money to support her gambling habit at the River City Casino.
Robert Wessels, the center’s director, said embezzling scheme had already been started by the time he began working there. He became suspicious after creditor began wondering why they weren’t being paid on time.
Wessels asked a judge to give Bensinger the maximum penalty possible.
Her sentencing is set for November 29.
