ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Neighborhood residents are calling for change after a man in a wheelchair was struck by a car and killed in south St. Louis on Monday.
According to police, the victim was crossing Hampton at Sunshine Street in his wheel chair when he and his assist dog were struck by a vehicle heading southbound.
The victim was transported to the hospital and later died. The Humane Society initially cared for the injured dog, but it passed away.
The driver was ticketed for speeding.
Now residents in the neighborhood are saying something needs to change. Where the accident happened on Hampton, there are not any crosswalks for at least a half-mile.
If someone needs to cross the street, the closest intersection with a light and a crosswalk is Loughborough.
Some residents who live in the area said they want city officials to make the stretch of road safer and more pedestrian friendly.
