ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – MoDOT has confimed that work has been completed on I-64 as of 6:45 pm. Two lanes are now open, though the center lane will remain closed as scheduled.
Only one eastbound lane was open on I-64 between 14th Street and the Poplar Street Bridge on Thursday afternoon, causing a headache for many drivers during rush hour.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials said repair work to the double-deck structure was taking longer than they initially thought. Work was supposed to finish by 2 pm, but vibrations from traffic are shaking the bolts loose on steel plates being used to cover some joints on the bridge deck.
The plates are loose and can’t be secured. Because of that, traffic is down to just one lane.
MoDOT officials say they are working on a solution and promise to have highway opened by morning rush hour. In meantime traffic slowed to a crawl and backed up for miles.
One driver said it took 90 minutes to get from Brentwood Commons to the Poplar Street Bridge and another said it took two hours to get from Skinker to Belleville.
Two eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed through Thursday evening’s rush hour.
Those lanes would be closed until needed pavement plate work was complete, officials said.
