(KMOV) – St. Charles is determined to stop the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting at military funerals, but it can’t stop the group from showing up on Thursday to protest the city council.
Tom Kuypers of the St. Charles Veteran’s Committee says veterans groups are already lining up to meet the Westboro Baptist Church protestors on the plaza outside St. Charles City Hall.
The Kansas-based church is targeting St. Charles because of a recent ban that is designed to stop anti-gay demonstrations staged at military funerals.
The group is so angered by the ban and others like it in Missouri that it’s taken St. Charles County to court, and insists that God is now punishing the state. It even thanks God on its website for this past weekend’s deadly tornadoes.
Calls News 4 made to the Westboro Baptist Church were not returned.
