(KMOV) – A Wellston city council member allegedly assaulted a member of the public at a council meeting Monday night.

According to the Wellston Police Chief, Helen Jackson, a council member with Wellston, got into a verbal altercation with an older female as she was attempting to address the council regarding her concerns about past meetings.

Councilwoman Jackson got out of her chair from behind the podium and approached the woman and grabbed her arm. The chief said there was a loud popping noise before he intervened.

The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment, her condition is not known.

Authorities believe charges could be filed against Jackson as soon as Tuesday morning.

Jackson reportedly assaulted another person at a meeting several months ago when she allegedly threw a soda bottle at another council member, injuring them. Jackson could also face charges for that allegation as well.

The investigation is ongoing.
