(KMOV.com) -- Downtown traffic patterns are about to change dramatically as crews will begin to divert traffic onto Walnut Street and make changes to Memorial Drive.
Beginning Friday at 1 p.m. drivers can exit I-70 at Walnut Street and instead of a one-way street with only three lanes, there will be six lanes and drivers can go in both directions.
“Memorial is not going to be the thoroughfare anymore that we are all used to using to get downtown,” said Deanna Venker with MoDOT, “It’s all moving to Broadway.”
And in a few more weeks, drivers will be able to walk the new sidewalks across the bridge.
“The essence of the project is really to transform the Arch experience for everyone,” said Ryan McClure with CityArchRiver, “Providing new, safer access between city and the arch ground.”
But improving the area will present major challenges and MoDOT plans to start blocking Walnut off at 9 a.m. Friday to make the big switch to dual-way traffic. The big switch will happen at 1 p.m.
“A lot of signing and stripping to go in place,” Venker said, “We will use police assistance to help us.”
If traffic on Walnut is too congested, drivers are advised to go one more exit down to the new Washington Avenue ramp.
