Centreville, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Volunteers came out this morning to Booker T. Washington Historical Black Cemetery to kick off the cleaning and restoration of the area.
Volunteers will be at the cemetery from 8 a.m to noon every Saturday starting today until the project is complete.
The cemetery has long been abandoned and there have been several efforts to clean up the area. Maintaining it has been an ongoing issue.
The Centreville cemetery was a designated burial site for African Americans in the turn of the 20th century. Approximately 5,000 people are buried there.
