UPLANDS PARK, Mo (KMOV.com) -- The village of Uplands Park is dissolving its police department. The move takes effect starting December 15.
The village says bills are mounting and it can no longer afford to pay the salaries for the eight police employees, so Uplands Park plans to contract with Velda City to provide police and court services.
“It’s poor management on the government side of managing money,” said Uplands Park Police Chief Steve Abbington. “The police department is doing their part; we’re writing tickets, making arrests, we’re doing what we’re supposed to to make the community safe and bring in any revenue. But its not up to us, its up to them to pay the bills.”
The board treasurer says the village was paying at least $120,000 a year for just the salaries of police employees.
