UNIVERSITY CITY (KMOV.com) -- University City Mayor Shelly Welsch said Monday she is considering reintroducing he idea for a “crime task force.”
Welsch is concerned by the fact that while overall crime in University City is down, the number of homicides is up.
The latest killing was Sunday night, when a 17-year-old victim became the seventh homicide of 2012. According to a police captain, University City normally sees only two or three homicides a year.
City officials report overall crime; assaults, burglaries, robberies are down and the city has recently approved adding seven more officers to the force and four more cameras to go with the eight already installed around the U-City Loop.
The city council voted down Welsch’s idea for a citizen’s task force on crime awareness and prevention last month.
But she hasn’t given up on the idea and says after the first of the year will decide if she wants to pursue it.
