(KMOV) – Police in Troy, Mo. are warning residents about a “secret shopper” scam being reported across the area.

According to police, residents have been receiving emails asking them to sign up to be a secret shopper and are being asked for their personal information.

Police say the scammers then mail fake cashier’s checks asking the residents to purchase Green Dot credit cards and provide them with the PIN so they have access to the cards.

“Unfortunately most of these type of scammers are not based within the United States and we have no way of pursing criminal charges against them,” The Troy Police Department posted on its Facebook page.

Police are warning anyone who cashes the fake cashier’s check could also face criminal charges.
