(KMOV) –News 4 has learned a police officer made a shocking discovery after pulling over a vehicle for a traffic violation near the Hazelwood West High School.

The officer stopped a vehicle with two men inside in late December. Wayman Williams, 17, told the officer he had just returned from basketball practice at Hazelwood West Middle School when the officer located a loaded gun in his gym bag.

“If he needed it for self-defense? Is he so strapped for money that he got it for somebody else, and he’s trying to pick it up? Did he in fact, find it? We don’t know,” said Captain Jim Hudanick.

Williams is a student at Hazelwood West High School, he told police he found a gun but gave varying details about where.

It is also unclear as to whether the loaded gun ever made it inside the Hazelwood Middle School

“It is possible, that the weapon was in the bag, while he was on school property. Yes, that is quite possible. But we have no evidence to indicate that that is the fact,” said Captain Hudanick.

The Hazelwood School District got back to News 4 late Thursday evening and would only say that the student has been disciplined.
