Mother charged with DWI following firework-ignited wreck on I-270

(KMOV) – A mother faces DWI charges after she and her two teenage children were hospitalized following a wreck involving ignited fireworks on Interstate 270 early Wednesday morning.

Kara Koriath, 43, was charged with driving while intoxicated, second-degree assault and child endangerment. 

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Koriath was driving on northbound Interstate 270 near Interstate 64 around 6 a.m. when fireworks went off inside the vehicle, causing her to veer off the interstate.

Her vehicle then struck a sign.

All three occupants were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. 

At one point, two right lanes were closed and traffic was backed up for about eight miles. The scene was cleared by about 7:45 a.m., though traffic remained heavy through the morning.

Further details into the investigation were not immediately known.
