(KMOV) – Authorities seized more than $16,000 during a traffic stop in the Metro-East Thursday morning.

According to deputies, an Illinois State trooper stopped a silver 2003 Volvo station wagon on Interstate 55 southbound at milepost 53 in Litchfield for a traffic violation.

During the stop, authorities said the driver and passenger were acting suspicious.

Deputies said the trooper investigated and found bundles of money in the vehicle totaling $16,492.

Authorities said documents found in the car indicated the money was going to be used for criminal activity.

Illinois State Police officials said several agencies were working together to investigate the incident.
