(KMOV) -- Thousands jammed downtown St. Louis Saturday for the 45th annual St. Patrick's Day parade.

Even before the sun came up, there were already people claiming their spots by setting up tents, roping off areas, and setting up chairs for a front row seat.

"You get up early. You claim your space. You get your own porta-potty, and you have a great time,” Andrea Dible, early bird parade goer said. “You watch the parade and just make some good memories."

The parade, also known as "St. Louis' Rite of Spring," featured five thousand marchers and more than 130 units including floats, bands, and balloons.

The parade began at noon by Union Station and headed east on Market Street.

Organizers say traditionally if the weather's good the parade usually draws anywhere from 250,000 to 350,000 people.
