ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Tuesday afternoon, while 76-year-old Bernice Edwards sat in a hospital bed in her home, thieves were outside stealing her air conditioning unit.
Police say it's likely the thieves were after copper.
"I couldn't believe it," said Edwards, who is diabetic and a double amputee.
Wednesday, Edwards' neighbors called News 4, concerned that Edwards was trying to tough it out in the dangerous heat.
The temperature inside Edwards' home hit 92 degrees on Wednesday afternoon. Two electric fans in the home only circulated the hot air.
News 4 contacted the United Way of Greater St. Louis. Cheryl Polk, the executive vice president, coordinated a swift response. By Wednesday evening, The Impact Group in St. Louis donated a window unit and two people from Vogel Heating and Cooling installed the unit.
Edwards' said she was grateful for the window unit and to her neighbors, who were concerned enough to ask for help
"I thought that was just great. I really appreciate them thinking about me."
