(KMOV) – One person was killed, another hospitalized following a single vehicle accident in north St. Louis City.

Authorities say a teen driver was reportedly joy riding when he lost control on ice and crashed at North Euclid and Calvin Avenues at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene said the driver was traveling at a high-rate of speed before he lost control and struck the tree.

The 15-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The male teenage passenger was rushed to the hospital in critical, unstable condition.

The driver was allegedly driving a stolen 2008 Mercury Sable which was taken Tuesday morning from the 4700 block of Margaretta.

Police say this is was one of 81 vehicles stolen this year after being left unattended with the keys still inside as owners were warming it up. As many as 350 vehicles have been stolen so far in 2014.

At this time, it is unclear if the teens were responsible for stealing the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
