(KMOV) -- Murder charges have been filed against the alleged accomplice of a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a homeowner during an attempted burglary in south St. Louis Friday morning.
Michael Bryant, 17, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree attempted burglary.
According to police, Bryant and Demetrius Murphy were attempting to burglarize a home in the 4600 block of Louisiana near Gravois Park around 1:30 a.m.
Police said a 33-year-old homeowner heard some rustling and went outside to investigate and reportedly shot Murphy as Murphy approached him. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
The homeowner’s name has not been released. Police say the shooting appears to be justified.
Bryant was located and taken into custody. Police said the murder charges were filed because Murphy died during the burglary.
A state law known as the castle doctrine allows people who encounter an intruder in their homes or vehicles to use deadly force without fear of being charged or sued.
