(KMOV) -- Police are searching for the suspects who robbed a group of teenagers at gunpoint in an Alton, Illinois park Wednesday night.

Alton police say they are upping patrols around Hellrung Park as the suspects are still on the run after the violent robbery at the skate park.

“The three males approached them. One displayed a handgun, they took items from then and fled the area on foot,” said Officer Emily Hejna with Alton Police.

Officials say three robbers ambushed three skateboarders during the evening hours at the park.

“I think it’s sad it’s sad they’d get robbed because they’re not really going to have any money on them anyway,” said a area resident.

Officers couldn’t give much detail about the case but say at least one of the suspects pulled a gun

“I haven’t seen nobody and I stay right here evidently they don’t close the park at the time they supposed to.”

One man, who lives nearby, said he‘s surprised such a violent act happened in an otherwise quiet park. “I come down here all the time with my kids they come and play and nobody ever tried to rob them.”

With no one in custody yet, police say they’re making the extra effort to help stop a repeat robbery.

“We are encouraging our officers to get out of the car get out and walk through park,” said Officer Hejna.
