(KMOV) – Police are looking for suspects they believe scammed at least two businesses in the Metro East into giving them money.

One of the incidents happened Friday at Kokomo Joe’s in New Baden.

According to New Baden police, a man walked into the store, filled out a job application and asked for the manager’s name.

The suspect called back later mentioning the manager by name, telling them they owe the suspects money.

Police say an employee was deceived and gave the suspect a “felony amount” of cash.

Authorities say four other businesses were targeted by what appears to be the same scam, with the Motomart in O’Fallon, Ill. also falling victim.

The suspects also targeted CC Food Mart in New Baden, and Motomart locations in Fairview Heights and Swansea.

Police are asking anyone with information on the crime to call New Baden police at (618) – 538-7741.
