ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Police say a suspect tried to take an officer's gun during a struggle after the officer caught the suspect in a backyard.

The officer saw the suspect, a 27-year-old man, in a backyard at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King and Marcus around 1 a.m. Saturday. When the officer told the suspect to get out of the yard and into the alley, he ran.

Officials say the officer chased the suspect and caught him in the 4700 block of Newcomb. The suspect then struggled with the officer and tried to take his gun. One shot was fired into the ground, but the officer regained control and the suspect fled the scene again.

The suspect was caught by other officers in the 1500 block of Marcus and was taken into custody.
