(KMOV) – Police are searching for a suspect who posed as a city worker in order to steal jewelry from a 79-year-old woman in south St. Louis on Monday.

Authorities say the suspect knocked on the victim’s door in the 5700 block of Pernod and told her he was with the water department and needed to check inside her home for bacteria.

Police say the victim let the suspect in and both of them went to the basement. According to authorities, the suspect made a phone call and distracted the victim for about 10 minutes.

Police say the suspect then told her to just put bleach in the water and abruptly left.

The woman got suspicious and called the city water department, which confirmed there had not been a worker in the area.

That’s when the victim discovered several pieces of jewelry had been taken from her bedroom.

Police say the suspect was described as a short, heavy set white man in his 30s with grey hair.

The investigation is ongoing.
