ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A man was arrested after police say he led offices on a chase throughout St. Louis before being shot early Tuesday.
Jorge Wallace, 25, was charged Tuesday afternoon with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
Police said an officer was patrolling the area of Bennington and Summerhouse in Maryland Heights around 11:50 p.m. Monday when he attempted to pulled over a Toyota Camry that had just crossed the center line.
The vehicle stopped in the parking lot of an apartment complex. As the officer approached, Wallace sped away and made an abrupt U-turn, authorities said.
Police said Wallace drove directly at the officer, who had just gotten back to his car. The officer then put his car in reverse and avoided being struck by the Wallace’s vehicle.
The officer chased Wallace eastbound on Page. Police said Wallace abruptly slammed on his breaks three different times, causing the officer to hit him.
Authorities said the Wallace’s vehicle slammed into two parked cars in 6900 block of Olive Blvd in University City. Wallace then fled the scene on foot.
According to police, the officer gave chase. That’s when Wallace pointed a handgun at the officer.
The officer then fired a shot at the Wallace, but did not hit him.
Wallace was later found hiding behind an air conditioning unit in the 1000 block of Roth Avenue in University City.
Wallace was arrested and taken into custody. The officer was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for a head injury and released.
According to police, Wallace was already wanted a felony warrant from Georgia for aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.
Authorities said charges for Tuesday’s incident were still being sought.
