(KMOV) – A suspect was arrested and one officer hospitalized after police were investigating a suspected methamphetamine lab at a Sunset Hills hotel early Thursday morning.

According to police, officers were responding to an incident at the EconoLodge Inn on S. Lindbergh Blvd. when they saw someone on a separate balcony cutting a lithium battery.

Police said officers then saw smoke coming from the room and smelled a strong chemical odor.

Authorities said an officer pushed open the hotel room door to assure it there was no fire. But as he entered he was overcome by the fumes. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution and later released.

Officers with the St. Louis County Drug Unit responded and secured the scene. They took one suspect into custody pending charges.

Additional information was not immediately available.
