(KMOV) – Hazmat crews were forced to shut down part of Interstate 44 near Sullivan, Missouri Friday night after sulfuric acid spilled onto the roadway.

Witness say a tractor trailer was leaking fluids while driving down the highway. Officials were notified, and an officer stopped the vehicle around 7:30p.m.

The officer who stopped the truck suffered minor injuries after inhaling fumes from spill. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to be okay.

It is unclear how much of the mineral leaked.

Officials say some cars were damaged while driving through the stretch.
